"Special Equine Assisted Living"

The SEAL program was started to help provide homes to the geriatric, blind or medically challenged equine that come to HHT. Caregivers that participate in this program will be required to maintain expense accounts on the cost and care for the animal they have chosen. The cost incurred for the care of this special needs horse is tax deductible as allowed by law, and a letter stating the donation will be sent to all participants.

Virtual Equine Sponsorships are marked with
Most of these animals have, or will be, with HHT for an extended amount of time while awaiting a court judgment. Help with their care is greatly appreciated. Consider becoming a "Virtual Equine Sponsor" today.

Please do not apply unless you are a serious and prepared adopter. It is very time consuming to process each application, so please do not apply unless you are ready to adopt a "Special Needs" equine.  Some have had no training or may require re-training. Some just need a loving home. Many of our past adoptions have turned out to become good trail horses while others are just pasture companions.

"Black Jack" is a good example of the possibilities.

HHT is looking for responsible homes for the animals that we adopt out. If adopters are not prepared to put the best interest of the animal first, please do not apply.

Placing an animal into a loving home is our main objective.

Be sure to come and visit the horses at our
"Neigh & Bray Adoption Day"

The second Saturday of the month we open the gate to our West Knoxville facility to allow people to come out and visit with some of the animals in our care. This is also a good time to visit with HHT volunteers and to find out what Horse Haven is all about.

We look forward to see you there from 10 -2 at our NEW location
2417 Reagan Road, located 1/2 mile off Pellissippi Parkway, off Hardin Valley

Bring your apples and carrots because some of our charges may just start picking your pockets if you come empty handed.

Suggested Adoption Fee's are just that, suggested. We hope people who decide to help a horse that has been through so much, will understand that we only recoup a very small portion of the monies spent on an animal to get it back up to good health.

New Arrival

"May May" is a very nice 4 year old Quarter Horse who's owner decided to breed when "some guy down the rode" asked if he could put his two stallions in the field with her. "Baby Red" the colt was born on May 5th. Two weeks later both his back legs were broken, but because the owner didn't have any money, decided to treat themselves by "soaking the leg". Once the infection set in, and he was beyond repair, we were called in to pick them up. X-rays confirmed our fear, and Baby Red crossed the Rainbow bridge after spending 2 weeks in pain. We were told if the colt had gotten there when this first happened there would have been a good chance for recovery, but the lack of care in that two week time span made that impossible now. Please...don't get a horse if you can not financially care for one.  And above all, Please don't breed just to breed.

Available

"Jenna" came into our facility in very poor shape. Jenna scored a 1 on the body scale. She has some issues that need immediate attention and we hope for a full recovery.

"Royal" is a 30 day year old colt that came in on Jenna's side. Very cute and hopefully has a great life ahead of him.

UPDATE: Both are doing great and the rode ahead looks promising. After a lengthy stay in quarantine they both got a clean bill of health and allowed out into a pasture. The pictures below were taken during the HHT 10th. Anniversary Open House.

"Dancer" is a 12 year old gorgeous man. He came in a stallion and has just been gelded. Looking for a potential adopter or foster that could house him for a few months and let his testosterone settle down some. Foster/evaluator would have first option to adopt. He does well when not around mares. Loads and leads great. Current minimum suggested adoption fee $500

"Stormy" is a cute little pony gelding approximately 3-4 years of age. He stands 11.2 hands and hasn't had much training. Will require an adopter who can give him plenty of one on one attention. Did very well with the farrier and seems to be getting over his people shyness.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee $150

"Banjo" is a 12 hand pony, gelding approximately 5 years of age. Banjo has signs of extensive founder over the years. Did very well with the farrier. Loves people and can be rather mouthy.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee $100

"PJ" is a cute paint pony gelding, approximately 13 years old. He stands 13 hands. He is the the dad of Stormy and Banjo. Did very well with the farrier. Can still be people shy does does well on a lead. Current minimum suggested adoption fee $250

Jeph is a Paint gelding, approximately 10 years old and around 15 hands.  He came to Horse Haven as a stray horse with a leg injury that was left untreated for at least 3 weeks.  He has since received proper treatment for this, including skin grafts.  Because his leg is still healing, we have not evaluated him under saddle, but we believe he is broke to ride.  Jeph’s injury does not affect his soundness, although even when healed, he will have scarring.  He leads, ties, stands for the farrier, and loads on the trailer.  Jeph has a great mind and personality, and we do not anticipate it will be hard to bring him back into work once his leg has healed.
UPDATE 3/28/09 - Jeph had no problems being tacked up and is broke to ride.  However, we can only recommend him for an experienced rider at this time, because he was a little fresh.  With more consistent time under saddle, we will see how much training he remembers, and he may then be suitable for a more novice rider.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $250

"Kip" is a grade, QH-type gelding we estimate to be approximately 10 years old.  He has a calm personality and great ground manners.  We have been told that he was ridden in the past, but he will not be evaluated until he has reached a healthy weight.  Kip is a great horse, but is not rideable at this time. We feel because he was rode in the condition he was in before being rescued he now may have some shoulder problems and is being evaluated. Such a shame because he is a very good boy.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $50

"Apollo" is a Pony of the Americas gelding we estimate to be about 7 years old.  He has flashy coloring and an outgoing personality to match.  He is missing his right eye, but gets around fine without it.  Apollo can get nervous if he is separated from other horses.  He will soon be evaluated under saddle and we will update this page with the results. UPDATE: Was rode bareback and did very well.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $250

  Thank you Jerry L.
"Curly Sue" is a grade mare we estimate to be 23 years old.  Curly Sue suffers from some health problems, including Cushings and COPD, which can be managed with diet and turnout.  She also came in with a bad case of rain rot, which we are nearly done treating.  Although life has been hard on Curly Sue, she still has a bright personality.  She has good ground manners and would love to find a special home to treat her like a princess.  UPDATE: Rainrot treatments are finished and she did very well. She still continues to shed out as her lack of nourishment took a toll on her body. Loves being with the other horses and her COPD seems under control as long as she isn't stalled for extended periods. A real sweetheart to be around.

Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $50

"Nicky" is a grade, QH-type mare estimated to be 4 years old.  We were told she used to be a child's horse.  Nicky needs some work done on her hooves before she can be evaluated under saddle, as her feet came to us in pretty poor condition.  She has a very sweet and laid-back personality.  Nicky is a really cute mare who has tons of potential.  She has great ground manners.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $250
UPDATE: Nicky has been rode by her evaluator bareback and does great with just a halter and lead rope.

    Updated picture
"Fancy Pants" is a grade paint mare we estimate to be 18 years old.  She also came to us pregnant, and is projected to foal about September.  Fancy Pants has great ground manners and a nice personality.  She does prefer to be in the company of other horses.  Because of her pregnancy, we have not evaluated her under saddle, but she has the potential to be a great, rideable horse for many years to come. Update: Fancy continues to gain weight in preparation for her new baby.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $250

Updated Picture  Thank you Clara L.
"Rosie" - est. at 24 years old. Mare with some medical issues and will require an extensive recovery time. UPDATE: Doing much better and getting much stronger every day, but she still has a long way to go. Update: Rosie has finally made it over the hump stage. Her overall attitude and strength have started to return and she loves to get out with the others. She is now running with the others and seems to enjoy her new surroundings.
Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $200

"Jack" is a 11 year old gelding that is blind in one eye. Requires an experienced handler that is not timid around him otherwise he will take advantage of you. Has been out on the trails and did great!
Current minimum suggested adoption fee $500

"Daisy" - Daisy has been returned to HHT after she didn't work out for her last adopter as a riding horse. She is a great mare on the ground who should not be rode. Something from her background has made her unpredictable under saddle. She can ONLY be adopted out as a companion. We would like to place her in the south, middle Tennessee area so she doesn't need to be trailered back to Knoxville.   Current minimum suggested adoption fee - $50
